30sec film artists Vol.63 – Rosalie H Maheux

“It’s interesting to see the contrast between religion and the feminist view”

Rosalie H Maheux: My body of work addresses feminist issues through the use of humour and irony. I play with commonly recognized symbols and icons that I shift and hybridize in order for new meanings to emerge. My artistic focus is the exploration of death and life and the social conventions associated with it; the consideration of the sacred and the profane and a special emphasis on human sexuality.

Rosalie H Maheux – 30sec film artists Q&A

How do you usually get inspired again after working on a big project/painting?

Immediately after I have some wine for the reward! And then, travel, reading, attending art shows, doing some sort of research, hanging out with people that inspire me, etc. But mostly I go back pretty quickly to my studio to experiment and play around with new stuff. Also, I work on proposal projects, submissions and artist statements. Writing about my art helps me a lot to think about it, to elevate it and transform the idea to another concept. I often find new ideas for future project while writing about a work.

What's the last great book you read?

Comics/graphic novel 'Bitch Planet' by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine De Landro.

What super power do you want to have?

All of them!

What do you fear the most?

Quicksand.

What project/art are you hoping to create but haven’t got chance to do yet?

A graphic novel.

Is there a childhood experience that has helped shape the kind of work you do today?

In Quebec, there are churches at every corners. I remember being mesmerized by the geometry of stained glass windows and the architecture. Otherwise, building camps and tree houses in the woods and chasing bugs was pretty much what I was doing all the time. Also, I had a very graphic educational book about sexuality, how to make babies, human body, anatomy etc...It was pretty detailed, no bullshit! I was obsessed with this book. I was always asking babysitters to read it for me, most of them did not want to.

Behind the Scenes – Filmmaker’s Experience

To me, art is about exploring the unknown and deconstructing what we’ve always believed sometimes. >>Read more on Patreon
